What synthetic creative feedback can and cannot tell you

A simulated audience can help a team examine its assumptions before a pitch. It cannot tell you how a real market will behave. Here is a practical way to use that distinction.

A guide for agency strategists and brand teams

Start with a decision, not a score

Write down the decision before running a test: which route to take into a client discussion, what a message may be misunderstood to mean, or which questions need live validation. Define the audience and market in the brief. The output is useful when it sharpens a decision and reveals its assumptions.

Compare like with like

Use the same brief, audience and evaluation criteria for each route. If you want to isolate a headline, keep the image and offer consistent. If the image, headline and offer all change, you are comparing complete routes. You cannot attribute a difference to one component.

Read the reasons, not only the ranking

Look for comprehension gaps, plausible objections, cultural or language concerns, and disagreements between perspectives. Ask whether the model had enough context. A convincing explanation can still be wrong. Keep the creative team responsible for interpretation.

Validate the consequential claim

Use real customer interviews, a representative study, or a controlled live experiment when the decision requires evidence about actual people or commercial performance. Check legal and category claims with the appropriate specialist. Record what was chosen and what happened later so future judgments can be calibrated against reality.

Useful for

  • Surfacing possible misunderstandings and objections
  • Comparing creative routes under a shared brief
  • Preparing questions for real audience research and client review

Cannot establish

  • Population-level preference or statistical significance
  • Sales, clicks, bookings or in-market lift
  • Legal compliance, rights clearance or client approval

What BrandSprk does today

Creative Testing gives directional simulated feedback on creative work. The team decides what to revise and what to validate with people. Automated competitor scanning and learning from live campaign results are under development.
